Tarot commentators often use the world “fear” when describing this card and it’s not hard to understand why. Whatever is happening in this card, or at least in the old book card, is dramatic and scary.  The black sky, the lightning bolt to the crown (chakra), the people falling, the tower exploding, and a free fall onto the rocks below. It seems definitely the better part of wisdom to avoid what’s going on here.

So, what’s it all about?

Well, it’s a little complicated but at root, the archetype represented here is that of the empowerment of the physical unit. In that sense, the underlying archetype is related to the card Chariot and Activation. However, in this case the emphasis is different.

In the Chariot card, we learn about the power and glory of the activated physical unit.

In Activation, we learn about the importance of energetic balance and cooperation.
